Dear Friend:

First, a hard-earned (and LONG sought) congratulations to the Kansas City Royals! I was in college at KU the last time the Royals made the playoffs and now my son will have a similar experience. What an exciting time to be in Kansas City!

In the meantime, I will be participating in a public forum with my opponent on Oct. 30 at the Cedar Roe Library (5120 Cedar in Roeland Park). However, with advance ballots mailed yesterday and advance voting in-person starting on Monday, I want to give you an opportunity to meet with me in another way. Please join me tonight:

Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014
6:30 - 7:30
Sylvester Powell Community Center
6200 Martway
Mission, KS

Teams of walkers join me each weekend to canvass neighborhoods and I am grateful for your welcoming spirit as they have knocked on your door. I am visiting as many doorsteps as I can each day, and love when I have the chance to talk with you personally.  Besides the demands of campaigning, my days are filled with work on legislative issues, constituent case work and continuous learning regarding emerging issues. Make no mistake – though we are a part-time, citizen legislature, doing the job well is a full-time gig:

  • Attending all meetings of the K-12 Study Commission
  • Provider Advocacy Coalition of Kansas (PACK) meeting on KanCare
  • Shawnee Mission Education Foundation Breakfast
  • Medical Society of Johnson & Wyandotte County Dinner
  • Bryantwood HOA Fall festival
  • Met with Dr. Willard Daggett to learn more about his teaching philosophy.
  • Council of State Governments Education Summit regarding Student Data for Workforce Development
  • Labor-Management Council reception
  • Kansas Leadership Center Konza meeting
  • Shawnee Mission Rotary Club lunchtime speaker
Finally, I was humbled and honored to participate in a CLE (Continuing Legal Education) panel with Kansas Supreme Court Justice Carol Beier, Deputy Education Commissioner Dale Dennis, and Ryan Wright of Kansans for Fair Courts, on the state of education policy and funding in Kansas at an Inns of the Court event. The mission of Inns of the Court is to “Foster Excellence in Professionalism, Ethics, Civility and Legal Skills” among attorneys.

For the Indian Hills Middle School 60th Anniversary, the former PTA Presidents gathered for a photo – a lot of great leaders pictured here!

Again, the first batch of Advance Ballots were mailed yesterday, but there's still time to request one sent to your home! Be sure to get yours by clicking the graphic below to complete your application.

Thank you in advance for your consideration in this election. The top-of-the-ticket races are getting a lot of attention, but I am grateful for your support and interest in the down-ballot races that make a bigger impact in our communities. Please do not hesitate to reply to this email or call my cell phone (913-961-1555) if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Rep. Melissa Rooker
